Food Insecurity in the Lowcountry

Food insecurity, or a lack of access to nutritionally adequate foods, is a troubling issue facing many in our community. In Charleston County alone, an estimated 50,260 people, or 13% of the population are food insecure.

Furthermore, hunger is an issue that commonly affects the children of low-income families. In certain counties, food insecurity among children increased by 38% between 2019 and 2020. As a result, roughly 55,000 children in the state are unsure where their next meal will come from.

About the “Food it Forward” Initiative

As part of our efforts to combat food insecurity in the Lowcountry, we are launching a new Island Food Rescue program called “Food it Forward.” Kiawah Island Club Members and guests have the opportunity to get involved with the initiative by donating any unopened and nonperishable items.

Examples of items that food banks commonly need the most include the following:

  • Canned soup
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned protein
  • Applesauce
  • Dried or canned fruit
  • Low-sugar cereals
  • Granola bars
  • Dried herbs and spices
  • Nuts
  • Rolled oats
  • Cooking oils
  • Jellies and jams

Pop-top cans that do not require a can opener are greatly appreciated. In terms of beverages, we recommend 100% fruit juice, canned milk, or bottled water. Please avoid bringing items that require refrigeration or are past the expiration date.

These generous donations will be delivered to our local food bank where they will be distributed to those in need.

The Importance of Giving Back to the Community

In the spirit of giving, we encourage you to participate in this initiative and donate any items you can in order to help others. Together, we can catalyze real change and improve the well-being of our community.
