Our Team Gordon J Hillock
Gordon J. Hillock has been a full time Kiawah resident and real estate broker since 1979.
A native of Grosse Pointe, MI, he received an under-graduate degree in mass communications along with a second degree in education from Wayne State University in 1968. After graduation, he left Michigan to move south to Vero Beach, FL, where he worked for the Johns Island community, a private, gated development.
It was there that Gordon was first introduced to the unique lifestyle offered in master-planned, gated community developments. His responsibilities at Johns Island included construction and property management duties that enabled him to develop a deeper appreciation for the finer elements that make for good community planning and development.
During this period, he had the special opportunity to work directly with Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus as they built a new golf course for Johns Island. He soon discovered there is more to a golf course underground than one sees above ground.
Several years later, his development experiences in Florida led him to yet another opportunity. Along the southeast coast of Puerto Rico, the Sea Pines Company of Hilton Head was just beginning to build a community called Palmas del Mar on an old coconut plantation. Gordon’s new duties included clearing the island jungle in preparation for the new residential neighborhoods. Here he also scheduled and tracked the progress of construction projects, and worked with Ron Kirby and Gary Player designing and building Palmas Del Mar’s first golf course.
It was his experiences at Johns Island and Palmas del Mar that truly prepared him for his next opportunity in real estate sales: Gordon was invited to join the newly formed sales staff on Kiawah Island in 1979.
Since joining Kiawah Island Real Estate, with his true appreciation for the many facets that go into planned community development coupled with over 35 years of selling experience on Kiawah, Gordon has been able to apply his construction, property management, communication, and teaching skills to help hundreds of existing and new families discover the many unique aspects of the Kiawah lifestyle.
One of Gordon’s favorite quotes by motivational author Zig Ziglar is: “You can achieve everything in life you want, if you will first help other people get what they want.”
In fact, this has been Gordon’s sales mantra—and his business practice—for more than 35 years selling Kiawah real estate. Putting this belief into practice, Gordon decided to be the only sales agent to employ a full time service manager (Christian Hartsel) whose sole mission would be to exclusively and proactively serve the needs of Gordon’s clients.
By focusing on service first, Gordon’s clients have come to appreciate this dynamic team’s ability to help them before, during, and after the sale by offering unmatched service capabilities like securing competitive bids for their renovation projects, overseeing renovations when they can’t always be there, sending timely building progress reports, inspecting vacant homes, coordinating maintenance and repairs, helping clients pack up, ship and/or donate their furniture, assisting in the planning of family weddings and reunions, and even caring for family pets.
Providing these free, exclusive range of services is why Gordon’s owners know that no matter what, Gordon and Christian are here on the Island every day, ready to help. The two are dedicated to ensuring that when their owners return to Kiawah, they can focus on enjoying their time together with minimal concerns and hassle.
Today, Gordon is proud to say, “Selling Kiawah has always been a special treat for me because of the unique opportunity to meet successful people from all over the world while representing the Kiawah community.”
Gordon and his wife Jeannie, a Charleston native, have been married for more than 30 years. They share their time together with their three children, Matt, Kat, and Elliot, and the family rescue dog, Winnie. Gordon enjoys wilderness canoeing, cooking special meals together with good friends and family, fishing, golf, reading, and sharing time together at the family summer camp in Traverse City, Michigan. He especially enjoys golfing with Jeannie when he is away from the office…she’s been the club champion 3 times!
In recent years, Gordon and Jeannie have helped sponsor and build four new Habitat homes for the deserving and in-need families just off Kiawah Island. Gordon has served as a board member and a fundraising committee member for the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. He is proud of the fact SIHH was recently voted as the best Habitat for Humanity affiliate worldwide for the second year in a row!
